We were chosen to execute a special order for the production and installation of 40 arched windows for the Zograf Monastery. The implementation combines traditional wooden joinery with modern technical solutions to preserve the spirit and architecture of the holy abode.

Rollplast and the unique project for the Zograf Monastery

The restoration and modernization project for the Zograf Monastery required not just windows, but wooden joinery that meets both historical authenticity and modern energy efficiency standards. The company was selected to manufacture and deliver 40 arched oak wooden windows to be installed along the corridors in front of the monastic cells. Each window was crafted with precision and attention to detail, combining aesthetics with functionality.

The oak joinery used matches the architectural style of the monastery and guarantees a long service life, stability, and thermal insulation. This project is an example of a successful combination between tradition and modern technology.

Master craftsmanship of oak wooden joinery

Each window for the Zograf Monastery is made of high-quality solid oak, using the IV78/78 system with a thickness of 78 mm. This guarantees strength, stability, and excellent thermal and sound insulation. The 40 mm thick wooden panel is precisely milled to provide both an aesthetically finished look and functional efficiency.

The windows are treated with varnishes in two specially selected tones – T5504 and T5709, which blend naturally with the facade composition of the monastery. The double-glazed unit used is configured for maximum insulation:

6 mm high-energy glass PLUS / 18 mm spacer / 6.8 mm laminated glass (3.3.2), filled with argon gas. The resulting heat transfer coefficient (Ug) reaches up to 1.00 W/m²K, and the overall Uw of the window is 1.56 W/m²K.

This is not just wooden joinery with double glazing, but a precise engineering solution tailored to the conditions of Mount Athos and the requirements of the spiritual abode.

Harmony between style, history, and technology

The project for the Zograf Monastery allowed no compromise with detail. Each wooden window had to reflect the historical spirit of the building while fulfilling strictly specified technical and aesthetic requirements. One of the key design elements was the cross-shaped decorative Georgian bar integrated between the glass panes. Its horizontal line is precisely positioned so that it aligns perfectly along the entire length of the corridor, despite differences in the height of the arched openings. This required individual measurement taking and extreme accuracy during the production of the wooden joinery.

At the special request of Abbot Gavrail, a unique decorative element was developed – milled on one side to accommodate the double-glazed unit, and on the other with a zero edge so that it fits tightly to the frame without the need for additional finishing or insulation. The minimal gap between the window and the wall is further proof of craftsmanship.

The white stone cladding characteristic of the monastery's facade was also matched with the style of the joinery, so that the new and the old merge into a harmonious whole.

Functionality adapted for long-term use

In addition to achieving visual harmony, a project of such scale and importance requires reliable functionality. To meet this, Rolplast equipped each wooden window with high-quality Winkhaus 2016 hardware – a proven choice for durability and long-term operation.

The system includes:

  • Fixed and opening sashes for flexible use;

  • Bronze handle DKT RS (900 mm) – with an elegant and durable design;

  • Decorative Georgian bar on the inside and outside (TWIN system), for complete visual consistency from any viewpoint.

This combination ensures not only convenience and security, but also long-term resistance during daily use under specific climatic conditions. Every element of the wooden joinery was selected with practicality, durability, and harmonious integration into the architectural appearance of the monastery in mind.

Logistics: from Sofia to Mount Athos

The execution of the Zograf Monastery project did not end with the manufacturing of the wooden joinery – the logistics were just as challenging. To reach the monastery in perfect condition, the windows went through a well-coordinated, combined transport scheme.

The first stage involved transport by ferry to Mount Athos, after which a specialized truck took the cargo to the territory of the monastery itself. Each window was packed with maximum care to ensure protection against impacts, moisture, and deformation during transit.

This precision in logistics highlights Rollplast's commitment to the entire process – from the production of oak joinery with double glazing to final delivery on site.
